In 2010, Pump Systems supplied a number of Lackeby sludge heat exchangers for the W2W Alliance sludge amplification and energy recovery program at the Beenyup and Woodman Point Wastewater Treatment Plants in Perth, WA. The total supply package consisted of five 3m long and two 6m long stainless steel sludge heat exchangers, which were custom designed for the project and manufactured in Sweden.
Lackeby sludge heat exchangers are ideal for applications where rag and fibrous material are present in the waste stream, as large throughput areas and smooth turn-chambers allow the sludge to be transferred and heated without the risk of clogging. The compact, space-saving design of the Lackeby sludge heat exchanger also lends itself to tight areas or plant rooms where traditional equipment can impact on valuable floor space.

Pump Systems have recently completed an interesting project at the Palmerston North City Council's Totara Road Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Council has recently undergone work to install a state-of-the-art waste reception facility, which takes a combination of food wastes, raw septage and piggery wastes before being processed and injected into the digesters at the plant. The introduction of fats, oils and greases (FOG) into anaerobic digesters can greatly enhance methane gas production.
Vaughan Chopper Pumps were preferred for the site due to their proven ability in handling difficult solids and to eliminate the risk of clogging. Of the three Vaughan Chopper Pumps supplied by Pump Systems, duties included; septage receival, for the unloading of tanker trucks on arrival at the plant; sludge tank mixing, where the combined waste material is mixed and preconditioned to produce a homogeneous slurry; and digester feed, for transferring the blended sludge to the digesters.
Pump Systems Ltd also designed and supplied the mixing systems for the two four metre diameter sludge tanks at the facility. Each mixing system consists of one wall-mounted double nozzle assembly in all stainless steel construction that is fixed at factory determined angles with no further adjustment necessary. There are no moving parts within the process and no routine maintenance is required, making the systems very self-sufficient and hassle-free. The two tanks are dual powered by a single externally mounted horizontal Vaughan Chopper Pump.

Pump Systems Ltd, working in association with W2W Alliance have recently completed a project for Water Corporation in Perth, Western Australia. The scope included the design and supply of two Vaughan Rotamix process mixing systems for two combined thickened sludge tanks, a new process at the waste water treatment plant. Due to the unique sludge characteristics, Pump Systems Ltd supplied a customised mixing design based on extensive Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling.
Each of the two 6.8 metre diameter sludge tanks are fitted with two sets of wall mounted Rotamix dual nozzle assemblies, which are suspended above the tank floor. This inverted nozzle design reduces mixing pattern obstruction while maximising velocities to keep solids in suspension at all times. Rotamix nozzle assemblies are glass lined and hardened to provide long lasting resistance from grit and abrasion. In addition, each nozzle comes with a 10 year full replacement warranty.
Powering each system are two externally mounted Vaughan Chopper Pumps - one operational and one standby pump per tank. The unique chopping action of the Vaughan Chopper Pump ensures reliable and clog-free mixing performance by constantly preconditioning rag and fibrous material to produce a homogeneous slurry. All of the Vaughan Chopper Pump's main wearing components are heat treated to a minimum Rockwell 60C hardness for outstanding wear and abrasion resistance, resulting in low overall maintenance requirements and significantly reduced life-cycle running costs.
